The Effect of Social Distancing on Social Media

While the word viral has taken on a whole new, and much more daunting meaning, things are still going viral on the internet. Maybe even more-so than prior to this pandemic. As we shut our doors to follow the stay-at-home orders that are in place, we’re reaching for our phones and laptops more than ever. Social distancing is giving a whole new meaning to social media.

TikTok in particular has seen a huge spike in average daily users and app downloads. And what’s going viral on TikTok these days? TikTok dances! I’m sure we’ve all gotten a few of the songs stuck in our heads, or even the “Tiger King” remixes of these songs. It seems as though nothing brings people together quite like setting up a phone and recording a new dance they learned for the world to see. In fact, some people are getting their whole family to join in! Moms, dads, and even the littlest of siblings are coming together to make these fun and often hilarious videos.

From creating dances to your favorite songs, to re-enacting a voiceover of a funny meme, content creation has become more and more playful during these serious times. This newly popularized app has also struck interest in advertisers everywhere. Who wouldn’t want to be advertising on a platform that’s had over a billion downloads worldwide? Think of the reach!
